The Popol Vuh is the story of creation. This story of Kiche from the Mayan how the world was made is similar to the Old Testament of the bible Genesis. The first time I heard and read the title of the next reading I thought, what is this all about? I was so confused from the start and it sparked my interest to learn more. The Popol Vuh was a story that was based on two twins(Hunahpu and Ixabalanque) who fought evil side by side until they gained victory. At the beginning of the story, it was said that they(the lords) tried to make humans. When they first attempted to, they made animals who would not comply with their wishes. So they decided to try to make humans with mud, which did not work because mud did not work well and it was easy to destroy. Then, they tried making humans with wood, which worked but they didn't really like how they acted due to their minds and hearts; being empty. As a result, the lords made humans through tadpoles and crocodiles, which ultimately evolved into monkeys who evolved into humans. In the Bible, it is said that God made animals first, however on purpose. Both readings say how they made animals first. In the Popol Vuh, Bloodmoon, one of the lords of death, picks fruit from somewhere she is told to not be. The head of One Hunahpu spits into her hand which then impregnates her, giving her the twins, Hunahpu and Ixbalanque. This compares to the Bible, where Eve takes a fruit from the forbidden tree, as she is told not to by our God. This then results in the sinning of all future Christians/Catholics. The Popol Vuh has many extreme similarities to the Bible/ Old Testament.
