The Tale of Genji

This story is very traumatic for women, those women have no choice but to do the things that the Emperor wants to do. Especially if they pick them to have an affair with them. Although according to the story, many women desire to be picked by Genji, because of his reputation in society. And I realized the unethical behavior of the Emperor was like past from generation to generation.

I can't imagine what life I would be if I lived 11 centuries ago in Japan. Personally, I don't like the way they treat the people in society. People don't have the freedom of anything if they are in a low level of life. People don't have a chance to look for a better future in their way of living. As a woman, you need to be beautiful and nice-looking to the emperor to have a chance to be picked by the emperor. In that way, your social status will bring up a little bit because of that situation. Since they get picked up they have to live in Kiritsubo where all the women need to stay a  wait until the Emperor whenever they want, I'm assuming living in that place will be a luxurious stay with nothing to do, relaxing all day.... but only in one room by themselves. How can you find your true love? If you know already that you're not the only one in his life. It is not fair to the other women, that Genji has many affairs with different women, every day.

  1. I agree, it is crazy for us now to read about a story in which women were treated so poorly. It really puts into perspective on how much has changed. The women fought over Genji's attention because they did not know any better. They measured their worth by whether they were chosen to be the next affair of a man who would forget about them after a couple days.
